Senior business leaders from York and the surrounding area came together recently to discuss HS2.
The business lunch event, organised by York & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, was chaired by Chamber President, Ed Everard, with Sir David Higgins, chair of HS2, as guest speaker.
Sir David outlined the parliamentary process for the Bills for the scheme to receive Royal Assent but emphasised much preparatory work is being done to speed up construction of the high speed network.
He said work on the eastern leg (Birmingham to Leeds and York) will be able to start earlier than had been anticipated and consequently will be operational sooner than expected. He added that he’d been impressed by how many cities and towns along the likely route are planning now for its arrival and the impact it will have.
Chamber President, Ed Everard said: “The private and public sectors in York must work together and begin planning now for the arrival of HS2 so that we can ensure the maximum economic benefit is realised for York and beyond. High speed rail will bring huge transformational changes with far reaching impact and we all need to be ready.”
